Autodesk Upgrade pricing changes

Effective 1 February 2013, Autodesk will simplify its upgrade pricing model. Starting next month, all upgrades will cost 70% of the current price for a new license.

The “Upgrade from Previous Releases” option will have an Autodesk SRP of approximately seventy percent (70%) of the current new License Autodesk SRP*, regardless of which of the six previous releases is being upgraded. Autodesk product releases more than six releases prior to the current release will no longer be eligible for upgrade.

For Softimage, I imagine the “six previous releases” covers only the Autodesk releases: 2012, 2011, 2010, 7.5, and maybe 7.01. I doubt it will cover 6.5, but you should check with your reseller to make sure.

And oh yeah, since it’s Wednesday, here’s a word cloud. I cheated a bit added more “70”s so it would stand out.

Out of the office

I’m “on the road” for two weeks, visiting Solid Angle London for a week, and then Solid Angle Madrid for another week. I hope the weather’s good over there: the forecast for Monday here in Montreal is sunny and 16 degrees…maybe the last warm day for cycling.

While in London, I hope to check out the Softimage Creatives user group meeting.

I’ll be back on 25 Nov. Until then, I’ve pre-written and scheduled my daily blog postings, just in case I’m too busy šŸ™‚

Compiled CHM version of the Softimage 2013 SDK guide

The other day, somebody asked whether there was a CHM version of the SDK help. There isn’t. So I downloaded a copy of the [aging and neglected] HTML Help workshop, installed the local version of the Softimage 2013 documentation, and compiled the SDK help into a CHM file.

Get the xsisdk.chm file here

  • You get full-text search.
  • I created the TOC manually, so it has only two levels. But clicking one of the sub-levels (like “Customizing with the SDK” or “Objects A to Z”) takes you to a page with more links.
  • I even added an index, but it has entries only for the commands, objects, methods, and properties. No C++. (I used a Python script to generate the index from some HTML pages in the help.)
  • Some pages will give a script error (because they have an apostrophe in the page title, and that title is used in a script). You can ignore those errors and continue on.
  • Some of the icons at the top of pages, like Home and Add to Favorites will pop up a browser page. I didnā€™t take the time to update every page to get rid of them.

I almost didn’t bother with the index, because I think you can usually get the same thing with the Search, as long as you enable Search titles only. It’s always bothered me that there’s no index entries like “children, adding” or “polygon meshes, creating” and that you have to somehow know the verb part of the method or command name if you want to find it in the index.

Here’s a few examples of using Search titles only:

New product support offerings from Autodesk

Autodesk recently unveiled its new support offerings. What does this mean for a Softimage customer?

  • Advanced support is basically Gold support renamed. You don’t lose any Subscription benefits that you already have.
  • Basic support is not available for Softimage and a handful of products, such as MotionBuilder, Showcase, Alias, and Simulation. In general, the reason why these products don’t have Basic are 1) they are acquisitions and we are maintaining the same level of support as they had before, and 2) they are complex products that require a high-level (eg expertise level) of support that our partners cannot provide.
  • Up & Ready support is available for 90 days (it was previously 30). So if you buy Softimage but not Subscription, you get 90 days of Up & Ready support for install and licensing problems.
  • Per-incident support is available for Softimage (it wasn’t before). Again, this is good for non-Subscription customers only. I believe it costs something like $150US.

Overall, the purpose of these new support offerings is to let the [majority of] customers choose the support that is right for them.
